Broadwater County — On Feb. 11 the Broadwater County Trust Board approved a $47,689.30 grant to the Rodeo and Fair Association to help cover multiple fairgrounds improvements, board members said.
The grant covers items listed by association representatives including materials to repair a handicap-access ramp and seating upgrades, a commercial-grade mower, a storage container and an outdoor arena sound system. "We are requesting assistance from the trust board of a little over $47,000," a Rodeo and Fair Association representative told the board during the presentation.
The association showed the board a table of project costs and said it would contribute labor and cash as a local match. According to the association's presentation, the group expects to contribute nearly $19,000 toward an approximately $66,000 total project cost, a roughly 40% match. Specific line items discussed included a 72-inch commercial mower estimated at about $15,000, a shipping container priced near $7,200, and an outdoor speaker system with quotes ranging from about $17,000 to $29,000.
Association representatives noted volunteers and local contractors will donate labor. Austin Rath, identified in the presentation as the owner of Rockin' AR Construction, was named as planning to donate labor to repair the handicap ramp; the association said Rath is licensed and insured. The association also said it will buy some seating from an internal memorial fund and seek community donations for additional benches.
Board members asked clarifying questions about site prep, whether the tractor already purchased was being counted as part of the project match and how the association planned to handle a potentially lower bid. The association clarified the tractor purchased last year is not part of this grant request and that the group understood the board would typically pay on invoices rather than issue a lump-sum payment.
Board member discussion was brief. A motion to approve the grant passed by voice vote; members called "aye" and the chair announced the motion carried.
The board did not set additional conditions during the meeting. Association representatives said they hope to complete prioritized work before the upcoming rodeo and fair events and will coordinate installation and invoicing with the county and vendor as needed.
