Commission names county office building ‘Jackson County Courthouse Center,’ schedules vote on courthouse tree removal and to consider support for probate-judge薪

The Jackson County Commission on Feb. 10 unanimously approved naming the renovated county office building at 205 Liberty Lane in Scottsboro the “Jackson County Courthouse Center.” County staff advised the name will allow the county to control courthouse security measures, including prohibiting weapons in the building under state law. The motion carried by voice vote.
The commission also received recommendations from the county extension office and the Scottsboro Tree Commission regarding a large eastern red cedar on the courthouse lawn. Extension and tree-commission reviewers reported the tree is in poor health—showing a red top and signs of soil compaction, insect damage and root disturbance—and recommended removal because the tree could fail in strong winds and damage the bollivard or courthouse property. Scottsboro Tree Commission Chair Donna Greer’s inspection and the extension office assessment both recommended removal; commissioners agreed to place the item on the next meeting agenda for a vote.
Finally, staff presented a draft resolution at the request of the county legislative delegation to support passage of a local act to increase the annual salary of the Jackson County probate judge beginning Oct. 2025. The draft cites Alabama Code sections referenced in the packet; the commission agreed to place the resolution on the next meeting’s new-business agenda for formal consideration.
