Hampstead reports higher-than-average water use, active leak detection amid low rainfall

According to the water report on the record, average daily water usage in January was 364,000 gallons per day and for February so far is 368,000 gallons per day. Rainfall recorded for January was 0.74 inches and for February to date was 0.27 inches. Staff said some of the higher-than-average usage likely stems from leaks caused by cold weather; crews have found and repaired several leaks and continue to investigate suspected household leaks.
The transcript notes the town is in a moderate drought because of low rainfall, and that stream gauges are “well below normal levels” with parts of eastern Maryland in severe drought. Town staff warned that if rainfall does not increase they will revisit drought status; public messaging and conservation measures were not mandated during the recorded meeting.
