Oak Creek staff report recent cluster of water‑main breaks; repairs ongoing

At its Feb. 11 meeting the Board of Public Works and Capital Assets received an update on multiple recent water‑main breaks that required extended response from distribution crews.

Engineering and distribution staff reported two days when crews worked more than 30 hours straight addressing breaks. Staff said one repair on Chicago Road was temporarily addressed with a stainless steel clamp; a separate incident on Fuchs Road required replacement of a 4‑foot pipe section at a bell connection that could not be patched. Staff described three breaks in the same repair area and noted that fill and gravel placed nearby for a horse pasture complicated the site; the city said it will work with the landowner to address runoff and materials that may be affecting the repairs.

“It’s super common when we just put the soil over there,” engineering staff said, describing how repaired pits can reopen. Staff said they inspected the exposed pipe sections and did not find unusually severe corrosion beyond localized spots; overall, they said the remainder of the system “looks really good.” Staff reported the city has made spot repairs in the past at nearby locations and is monitoring the situation; they said there is not yet a system‑wide replacement program triggered by these events.

Board members asked whether full main replacement was needed; staff said crews will continue monitoring and performing targeted replacements as necessary but are not recommending an immediate, large‑scale main replacement. The discussion was in the administrative report portion of the meeting and did not result in a new motion.
