Cabarrus board approves five-priority legislative agenda for 02/2025

The Cabarrus County Schools Board of Education on Feb. 10 approved a five-item legislative agenda the board will present to state lawmakers next week.
The agenda, described to the board as a concise set of priorities, lists recruiting and retaining quality teachers; strengthening education funding; reforming the school accountability model; increasing regulatory flexibility; and enhancing school safety. Board members said the brief format is intended to make the district’s requests easier for new legislators to absorb.
Dustin Shue, a district staff member who helped prepare the document, told the board, “This agenda was developed under the coordination of Mr. Mills and Ms. Freeman … The process involved reviewing the legislative priorities of state and national educational organizations, gathering input from each board member, and synthesizing that input to identify key focus areas.”
Board Vice Chair Greg Mills, who led the legislative committee, thanked staff and colleagues for compiling the list and said the packet is intended as a starting point for conversation with legislators. “I appreciate all the work that you guys put into it, and I look forward to that,” Mills said.
Board members said they want the committee to remain active through the year and to treat the document as a living list that may be amended as state and federal proposals move forward. The board scheduled a public legislative meeting with state legislators for Feb. 17 to review the agenda and gather feedback.
The board voted to approve the 02/2025 legislative agenda during the meeting. No individual vote tally was read into the record; the chair called for the board to vote and members responded in the affirmative.
The board asked staff to return to a future meeting with a fuller presentation breaking each priority into specific legislative asks and supporting information for the Feb. 17 meeting with legislators.
The approval of the agenda will allow district officials to use the board-endorsed priorities in upcoming meetings with state lawmakers and stakeholders.
