Pearland ISD honors band parents who subdued an armed attacker at off'campus event

Trustee Francis opened the meeting by recognizing community members whose actions helped stop an active shooter at an off'campus event. "We have 4 courageous heroes who put our children's safety above their own," Trustee Francis said, listing the men as "Pride of Pearland Pit Crew Dads Abraham Trevino, Adam Kuro, Efrain Castillo and Joe Sanchez." Superintendent Dr. Berger described the moments after he received an alert about an active shooter and thanked the men for acting without regard to themselves.
"They were there when this started to happen...our dads, our military, our police officers, but our dads responded," Berger said. "They are humble heroes. They are ordinary men that were there like they always are for their kids, but ordinary people do extraordinary things when it's called upon."
The board also recognized another community member, identified in the meeting as Corey Veasey, for involvement in mitigating and subduing the attacker. Trustee Francis noted multiple civic recognitions: the district planned a ceremonial medal presentation and the city planned a dinner honoring the band dads the following night.
A representative from the Texas State Board of Education (introduced as Miss Pickering during the meeting) presented a proclamation thanking the men for their courage. "In your heart is courage, love for children, and service of others...beyond behalf Texas State Board of Education, I just wanna say thank you to y'all because y'all really do embody everything that is best about the state of Texas," she said.
Why it matters: Board recognition publicly acknowledged community members whose intervention stopped a violent event and reinforced the district's emphasis on student safety. The district and city planned additional honors for the men and staff involved.
