Mr. Russ, an administrator, said the adjustments aim to give contractors more contiguous time in the building for tours, asbestos abatement and turnover work tied to the district’s project schedule. He said potential contractor activities include spring fencing, abatement and site walkthroughs; having a big chunk of time without students on site improves efficiency and bidder participation.
Board members debated the calendar’s start date in August. Several members, including Miss Lopez and others, expressed concern that an early August start (the presentation proposed a possible August 1st–21st range, with one draft showing an August 21 or earlier start) could interfere with family summer plans and youth sports. Administrators noted the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) permits official start dates prior to Sept. 1 in certain circumstances, including construction, but stressed the district would not reduce staff pay or contract protections without board direction.
Finance and human resources staff reported operational constraints to consider: bus contracts were negotiated around 175 student contact days, and historically hourly and classified staff work agreements reflected a different set of days; administration said it would work to avoid reducing staff pay. The calendar committee recommended keeping winter break as two weeks to support contractor access and to allow potential bidders to tour the high school during school hours.
After discussion, a board motion to revise the 2025–26 calendar to end the student year on May 22 was moved and seconded and passed 6–0. A separate motion to adopt a two‑week winter break for construction access also passed 6–0. Administration will return to the board with alternate start‑date drafts (including options around August 21, August 25 and the week of August 5) and with plans for how to allocate any staff professional‑development days or other non‑student contact days created when the student calendar was shortened.
Board members raised additional operational questions the administration will address in follow‑up: how many built‑in snow days are included (administration said the draft contained multiple built‑in snow days and the district remained above the minimum required instructional minutes), how the calendar change affects bus contracts and hourly staff, and whether any transition days for students would be retained. Administrators said they obtained a limited exception from the bus contractor for a 175‑day schedule and that they would continue collaborating with staff, the busing company and affected employees to finalize calendar details.
The board’s direction narrows the options: the student year will end May 22 and administrators will propose start‑date alternatives and a plan for staff days at the next meeting.
