Maitland Public Library schedules Astronomy Week starting Feb. 24; mobile planetarium, telescope nights planned

Stacy Clarkson, director of the Maitland Public Library, invited residents during the Feb. 10 City Council meeting to participate in the library’s Astronomy Week, which begins Monday, Feb. 24.
Clarkson said the week will include programs for all ages: junior astronomer activities, a mobile planetarium hosted by the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m., telescope nights with the Central Florida Astronomy Society at Penn Strong Park, solar telescope viewing on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, a stars program with a NASA ambassador named Azaria, a lecture by a geologist who studies Mars on Thursday evening, and a Friday afternoon “celestial cinema” screening. Clarkson also noted the library owns Orion StarBlast telescopes that patrons may check out.
Clarkson encouraged residents and council members to attend events and said the week is timed to coincide with a period of heightened sunspot activity, which will make solar viewing interesting. No council action was required; the announcement was part of the public comment/reporting portion of the meeting.
