The St. Pete Beach City Commission voted to approve a task order with Half Associates Inc. for engineering design services to retrofit check valves at Pass‑a‑Grille in response to storm damage and maintenance challenges.
Public Services Director Camden Mills explained the existing check valves are placed at the pipe ends in locations that are difficult to maintain; the proposed retrofit would move valves landward, closer to access points, allowing routine divers and maintenance contractors to service growth and debris that have hindered performance. Mills said earlier operations had cleared upstream baffle boxes but that divers and in‑pipe maintenance work had not yet been completed; the new design and relocation of valves will make future maintenance easier and reduce vulnerability to recurring storm impacts.
The commission approved the task order amount of $58,598.99 and authorized the city manager to execute the agreement. Mills said the goal is design and procurement in a schedule that could be completed within roughly six months following a notice to proceed, with on‑site construction taking weeks after materials procurement.
