Glynn County spelling bee champion named; FFA chapter outlines spring activities

Camille Newkay, a seventh-grade student identified in the meeting transcript as representing Needwood, was named Glynn County’s 2025 spelling bee champion after correctly spelling “astringent,” the Glynn County Board of Education heard Tuesday night. Julia Knight, identified as an eighth-grader, was named alternate.
The board was told Newkay will compete in the Region 8 spelling bee on Feb. 22 in Savannah; if she advances, she would appear at the Georgia Association of Educators state spelling bee on March 21 in Atlanta.
The announcement came during a school spotlight segment that also featured members of the Golden Knights FFA chapter. “Hello. I’m Sydney King from the Golden Knights FFA chapter, and I currently serve as the chapter president,” Sydney King said, and described the chapter’s designation as a Gold Emblem chapter and recent activities including marsh cleanups, a vet science summer camp and a Cannon’s Point sapling project.
Emily Hoskins, the chapter’s student advisor, told the board the chapter’s annual strawberry fundraiser is its principal source of program funding this year; “We’re currently trying to sell 300 flats,” Hoskins said. Hoskins also outlined events planned for National FFA Week beginning Feb. 15: a college tour to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College for juniors and seniors, a Department of Natural Resources presentation to classes about local career opportunities, and a first-responder appreciation lunch served by students.
Board members thanked the students and advisors for their presentations. The meeting record shows no public commenters signed up for the citizens-address-the-board portion of the agenda.
The spotlight segment emphasized student achievement and local agricultural education programs that the board said support extracurricular learning and career exploration for Glynn County students.
