North Brookfield selectmen accept two resignations, call for 250th‑anniversary committee and list open election seats

Selectman Von Schleybel addressed the board in a prepared statement that was read during the meeting. In the statement he said he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and had been contacted by an individual who raised concerns with his employer over his elected activity. He told the board that certain actions while on the job—such as discussing town business with residents or emailing town employees—could run afoul of the Hatch Act’s restrictions on political activity by federal employees. He said he could not effectively fulfill the selectman role while protecting his federal employment and therefore decided to step down. The board moved to accept both resignations and the motions carried.
The board also acted on a request to form a town committee to plan the town’s 250th‑anniversary celebrations. A resident who said she had helped organize the town bicentennial 50 years ago asked the board to authorize an open committee. The board voted to advertise for committee members and to form a planning group; members were encouraged to reach out to existing local organizations such as Parks and Recreation and the Historical Society.
During announcements the selectmen also reviewed nomination-paper availability and listed seats up for election in 2025, noting several incumbents who are not seeking reelection and multiple vacancies. The board urged residents to consider running for local office and listed available seats including selectman (one 3‑year seat and one 2‑year vacancy), town moderator, town clerk, school committee seats and several others; the town clerk’s office will provide seat descriptions and nomination paperwork.
The board recessed into executive session at 6:30 p.m. to discuss strategy for police union negotiations and collective bargaining under General Laws chapter 30A, §21(a)(3).
