County schedules FEMA ICS‑402 training for elected and senior officials Feb. 19

Emergency management staff told Mason County commissioners that FEMA's ICS‑402 course for elected and senior officials will be offered to county and special‑purpose district leaders on Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 8 a.m. to noon. The instructor said the course is federally written and intended to help local elected officials understand roles, recovery funding pathways and how to order resources through the state to the federal government.
Staff said Mason County currently has far fewer officials trained than FEMA expects: about 23 enrolled or completed versus an estimated 105 senior officials FEMA expects. The instructor said the course covers activation definitions (normal operations, state of emergency, disaster declaration), funding rules, and interfaces with fire districts, school districts, PUDs and other special‑purpose districts. Certificates will be issued; staff said they are working to ensure remote (Zoom) attendees can be certified.
The course will be held at the Emergency Operations Center and public works facility. Staff urged outreach to fire commissioners, chiefs and other stakeholders; initial RSVPs were limited but staff said they will continue to solicit participation.
Commissioners were asked to support outreach to partner districts and to encourage elected and senior officials to attend.
