Broward County proclaims February 2025 Broward Heart Month; county screening program reports 4,500 scans, 58% needing follow-up care

Vice Mayor Mark Bogan presented the proclamation and said the project began in 2023. County and hospital-affiliated speakers described program results: 4,500 people have received advanced cardiac scans through the pilot, and approximately 58 percent — roughly 2,500 people — who were asymptomatic at the time of screening were identified as needing immediate care such as medication, stents or surgery.
Dr. Claudio (consultant identified in the record) and Jessica Lerner, identified as CEO of Sidcura, described the outreach and administration partnerships. Lerner said Sidcura — which she said is owned by Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System — helped administer the program and was surprised by the number of residents who signed up and the high rate of positive findings among asymptomatic participants.
Speakers stressed the project’s goal of early detection and prevention. Bogan noted the county funds preventive screenings “aimed at addressing risk factors for heart disease” and encouraged residents to apply for the Broward Heart Project.
The proclamation cited national and state statistics about heart disease reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and stated the county’s commitment to collaborating with healthcare providers to reduce cardiovascular disease in Broward County.
