Wes Sills, a Dunn city council member, and other Dunn representatives said the multi-day tournament will bring thousands of visitors, temporarily swelling the city population and stressing police and EMS resources. The city and partners expect opening ceremonies at Campbell University’s stadium and games across two parks, and they requested county support to cover overtime for the sheriff’s office and local EMS and police to provide continuous security, including overnight patrols to reduce hotel parking-lot crime risks.
Sills and other presenters discussed an estimated total cost in the range of $37,000 to $40,000 for overtime and staffing; a breakdown treating sheriff, Dunn Police and EMS expenses was not given at the Feb. 11 meeting but staff said a detailed breakdown had been emailed to county staff. Commissioners asked the city to provide detailed figures; the board directed staff to place the request as a separate line item on the next meeting agenda so the figures could be reviewed and the board could consider inclusion on the consent agenda or budget adjustments.
No formal county funding commitment was made during the Feb. 11 session; the board asked for a detailed cost breakdown from city and event organizers before taking action.
