Harnett County Public Library asked commissioners on Feb. 11 to approve an application for a second Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) project grant to expand RFID technology and self-service kiosks to six branch libraries.
Joanna Cox said RFID technology was installed at the main library in 2021 and has improved checkout speed and reduced misplaced items. The proposed project would add self-serve kiosks, RFID-enabled security gates and staff tools at branches in Angier, Benson, Boone Trail, Coats, Dunn and Erwin (presenter named branches as Anjer, Ben Haven, Boone Trail, Coatsdon and Erwin; transcript spelling varies). Cox estimated the total project cost at about $133,800 and requested $100,000 from LSTA; the county would match the remaining $33,800 from the capital reserve fund as a capital-improvement project.
Board members asked clarifying questions about kiosk check-in/check-out functionality; Cox said kiosks would handle check-out but not check-in. Commissioners agreed to add the application request to the consent agenda.
