Assistant superintendent Doctor Horne (presenting) said the changes are not new classes but adjustments to course titles and language so middle‑school exploratory offerings better match high‑school elective pathways and the state’s PACE (Postsecondary and Career Expectations) framework. “These classes are designed to give an introduction to that field of study and to help students identify what they like, what they wanna study when they get to high school,” Horne said.
Examples discussed included renaming a general industrial‑arts offering to “Introduction to Design and Building” and rebranding a seventh‑grade music elective as “Rock Band” to raise student interest. Horne said the reorganization corrects a prior scheduling gap that left some eighth graders without access to a computer class; the change will preserve equitable progression across sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
The board moved and approved the course‑offerings book on first reading in a roll call vote of 6‑0. The presentation materials and the handbook language will be brought back for final approval as part of the annual fall course‑offering cycle.
