Bethel Park library expands student card program; reports attendance and fundraising from recent events

Library director reported the extension of a student library card initiative to upper grades, event attendance and fundraising results, and a Presidents' Day closure.
Christine, director of the Bethel Park public library, reported that the library submitted enrollment data for students in grades 7 through 12 under a student library card initiative. The director said this is the third year the library has provided full physical library cards to students in the school district; the program will be expanded to include grades K–5 and grade 6 when a new elementary center opens in fall 2026. She said the initiative is countywide across Allegheny County and includes 15 school districts and their corresponding public libraries.
The director also gave a brief event summary: the Bourbon, Bean and Vino plus Chili Cook-Off held Saturday, Feb. 1 drew 165 people, featured 15 chili cooks and five beverage vendors, and netted just under $2,700. Net proceeds will be divided evenly among four organizations comprising the Bethel Park “Fantastic 4” charity: the Community Foundation, Education Foundation, Historical Society and the Library. The director named the People's Choice winners (third place: Bethel Park Police Department; second: Joe and Shannon Vilani from Bethel Park School District; first: Dan Noor of Become Better Sports and Personal Training) and said the library plans to hold the Cook-Off again next year.
She announced the library will be closed Monday, Feb. 17 for Presidents' Day and will reopen Tuesday at 10 a.m., and invited questions from council.
