Lindsay Shaw, a Logan neighborhood resident, addressed the Spokane City Council Monday during an appointment hearing for the parks board, describing a focus on neighborhood equity, activating parks with programming, and balancing safety with inclusivity.
“I'm born and raised in Spokane. Moved away and came back to really appreciate, especially our parks and our beautiful city and then having children,” Shaw said, explaining her interest. She described seeing uneven maintenance and use across neighborhoods and said that lived experience in District 1 would help bring attention to parks that have seen fewer improvements.
Council members asked about the intersection of public safety and parks and about Shaw’s capacity to serve. “Where do you kind of see like the intersection of public safety and parks?” Council member Dillon asked. Shaw said activating parks through inclusive, no-cost programs and encouraging volunteer projects such as community gardens could make parks feel safer and more welcoming.
Council member McKechnart pressed Shaw on her commitment to attend meetings and participate in subcommittees. Shaw said she viewed the appointment as a pivot from neighborhood advocacy to broader citywide advocacy and said she would be a consistent advocate for District 1.
Council member Bingo praised Shaw’s local perspective and urged broader District 1 representation on the board. No formal vote to appoint Shaw was recorded on the agenda-review transcript included in the meeting record; the exchange on the floor constituted testimony and an introduction to council members.
The council’s parks-board appointment process will proceed according to standard procedures; staff will place any formal appointment vote on a future meeting agenda if that is the next step.
