Committee refers medical examiner fee increase to county board, citing CPI adjustment

The Marathon County Public Safety Committee on Feb. 11 voted to refer a proposed increase in medical examiner fees to the county board for action as required by state statute.
Medical examiner Jessica Blanick told the committee the office annually reviews fees and that the consumer price index (Dec. 2023 to Dec. 2024) rose 2.9 percent. Blanick said applying that increase would raise the fee for a cremation permit or a disinterment permit to $283 and is estimated to generate roughly $8,600 in additional revenue per year.
County staff explained the fee adjustments were part of a multi-step plan to scale fee revenue to support operations for a regional forensic science center without increasing county tax levy support. Staff said state statute requires the county board to take action on this fee schedule change, which is why the committee referred the matter to the board.
A motion to refer the fee increase to the county board passed on a voice vote.
