Committee adopts flat $500 fee schedule for large assemblies ordinance

The Marathon County Public Safety Committee on Feb. 11 approved a fee schedule that sets a $500 base fee for permits under the county’s recently adopted large assemblies ordinance (12.04).
Shad of the County Planning and Zoning (CPZ) office explained the fee schedule was required after the county board approved ordinance 12.04 in January and that the intent is to recover county costs for multi-department reviews. Shad said the fee ‘‘is proposing a fee of 500’’ and that the county no longer proposes a tiered structure based on event size because review costs do not scale directly with attendance.
Committee discussion noted that other counties vary in their approaches; Shad said Marathon County’s fee is ‘‘higher than some, but ... lower than some’’ depending on the county. Staff provided historical context: the prior tiered fee schedule began at $500 for events between 3,000 and under 10,000 people and rose to $1,500 for events of 50,000 or more.
A motion to establish the fee schedule passed on a voice vote; the committee chair noted the fee schedule does not require further county board action.
