Planning commission approves revised signage for Digital Print Solutions on Freeway Drive

The city planning commission on Feb. — discussed and approved revised signage for Digital Print Solutions at 908 Freeway Drive, approving the wall sign and approving smaller instructional signs if the applicant resubmits final drawings and meets safety mounting requirements.
Planning staff presented a report dated Feb. 1 describing the revised proposal: the applicant removed a proposed ground monument sign, kept two instructional (directional) signs and a wall sign, and changed the canopy to a metal awning suspended from the building. Staff said the two instructional signs were reduced in size from about 5.33 square feet to 3.89 square feet on the resubmission, which would cure a code-size issue. The wall sign was reported at about 20.98 square feet, and staff said the wall sign treatment had been revised to dimensional lettering with a vinyl overlay for a gradient logo.
Commissioners and staff discussed sign location and public-safety mounting. Staff and another commissioner agreed the instructional signs sit within a wide road right-of-way; they recommended mounting those signs on breakaway posts with no foundation so a vehicle strike would shear the posts instead of producing a rigid, anchored monument. The commission also noted the applicant may wish to pursue a variance to include a logo on the instructional sign; the commission cannot grant that and directed that logo approval must be sought from the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA).
After discussing required submittals — a clearer site plan locating the instructional signs and the resubmitted sign elevations/materials — a commissioner moved to approve the signs based on the resubmittal with the smaller instructional signs, with the on-post instructional signs designed to be breakaway because of their location in the right-of-way, and with administrative review of the resubmitted plans. The motion was seconded and the commission voted in favor.
The approval covers the signs as resubmitted, excluding the logo on the instructional sign; the commission recorded that logo approval would require a variances process at the BZA. Staff requested the applicant submit the revised drawings into the record for administrative review.
The commission moved on to the next agenda item after the vote.
