The Shakopee Public School District School Board on Feb. 10 approved changing elementary specialist scheduling from a 10‑day rotation to a 4‑day rotation and moved full band out of the specialist rotation, voting 4–3 on an amended motion that directs a study group of band teachers, elementary principals and LTE staff to develop a system that retains full band and avoids adversely impacting class sizes.
The recommendation to move to a 4‑day rotation and to move band outside the specialist rotation was presented by elementary leadership staff as the product of eight months of research into scheduling, travel time for specialist teachers and student contact time. "Our recommendation is to change the structure of the specialist rotation from a 10 day rotation to a 4 day rotation," one presenter said, adding that the team will continue working with band teachers on a plan to retain full band.
