Colorado Springs councilmember presents School Board Appreciation proclamation; board recognizes student reps and staff

Colorado Springs City Council member Yolanda Avila presented a proclamation to the Harrison School District No. 2 Board of Education at its Jan. 23 meeting declaring Jan. 23, 2025, as Colorado Springs School District 2 School Board Appreciation Month.
"It's such an honor and a privilege to be here," Avila said before reading the proclamation that noted the board's role in setting standards, aligning resources and supporting student achievement. The proclamation is signed by Colorado Springs City Council President Randy Helms and was delivered on behalf of City Council District 4.
The board used the meeting to recognize its student board representatives for their service. Superintendent staff presented gifts and comments for student reps, including Misha and Aidan, and principals acknowledged exemplary student engagement at their schools. Board members and district staff also noted that Superintendent Dr. Burhanzl recently received a "Women of Influence" award and several principals and members of the executive team were attending that event in her stead.
Board members accepted the proclamation and posed for photos with students and staff. Board members and attendees repeatedly praised student voice and the district's community partnerships during the recognition period.
