The Colorado Springs School District 11 calendar committee on Jan. 29 presented a draft 2025‑26 school calendar and the board discussed next steps. The committee, which met since October and included 27 participants representing teachers, principals and district staff, used survey results from students, families and staff to shape the proposal.
Miss Otmer, the staff presenter, said the committee prioritized instructional time and teacher work days: "We used the committee community agreements throughout the calendar process... The committee was comprised of 27 members that convene together. You can see representation from teachers at all grade levels. Also, principals, area superintendent, and then district representation from payroll to compensation..." She described survey findings showing broad support for fall break and that families preferred a full day for parent‑teacher conferences when scheduled.
The draft calendar adds an additional student contact day and balances teacher work days with embedded professional development. The committee recommended keeping coaching and job‑embedded professional development rather than replacing those activities with full‑day PD. Board members asked about the timing of the committee’s work and whether calendar development could begin earlier in the cycle so families know next year’s dates before year end; staff indicated they could present a non‑action draft earlier in December in future cycles.
The board agreed the calendar will be presented as an action item at a forthcoming meeting; staff said they will distribute slide materials and that the draft had already received a "thumbs up" from joint council.
