The Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education approved a $138,500 general fund contingency transfer on Jan. 29 to provide stipend payments for staff displaced by Jenkins Middle School’s remediation and relocation.
Superintendent Gahl said the district moved quickly to accommodate students after the discovery of building problems and added: "We have the geotechnical engineer through CTL Thompson that is on-site. We're still anticipating the full report by Jensen Hughes by the end of this month, which will be the end of this week, and we will share that publicly and transparently with our community when it comes in." The superintendent said the district will post a design‑build RFP and hopes to award a contract within about a week of receiving the geotechnical report so work can move to remediation planning.
The stipend motion was made by Director Nelson: "I move that the Board of Education approves this general fund contingency transfer in the amount of $138,500 to support the Jenkins Bridal School staff stipend." The motion was seconded and approved by roll call: Directors Bankes, Carey, Jorgensen, Malpakam, Nelson and Ott voted Aye.
Assistant Superintendent/administrator Doctor Comfort explained the stipend is intended to compensate staff for additional demands during the temporary relocations and that mileage will be covered for staff who must travel between Russell and Doherty for assignments. District staff also reported the board already authorized smaller contingency transfers to Russell and Doherty to support displaced staff and students and that painting and room preparation are planned for spring break to avoid removing teacher decorations prematurely.
Board members praised the district's logistics and community support for quickly relocating Jenkins students and staff. Director Jorgensen said, "We moved two schools and got kids back in the classroom in 3 days." Directors and staff emphasized the district will wait for the Jensen Hughes report and a separate geotechnical assessment before making a final decision on long‑term remediation and expected to share timelines and options publicly, with a goal of final decisions by spring break.
The board’s approval moves the stipend transfer into effect; staff said additional details about the remediation procurement and schedules will follow as reports and the RFP responses arrive.
