Bloomington City Council unanimously appoints members to five advisory boards and commissions

At its Feb. 10 meeting the Bloomington City Council confirmed appointments to the Advisory Board of Health, Creative Placemaking Commission, Human Rights Commission, Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission and Sustainability Commission after interview panels recommended candidates.
The Bloomington City Council voted unanimously Monday to fill openings on five advisory boards and commissions, approving the interview panels’ recommendations for multiple seats.
Council members approved five packages of appointments — to the advisory board of health; the creative placemaking commission; the human rights commission; the parks, arts and recreation commission; and the sustainability commission — by 5-0 votes.
The appointments came after interview panels conducted dozens of candidate interviews the week prior. Council member Carter, who served on the advisory board of health interview panel, described the advisory board pool as “very, very competitive” and summarized the finalists’ qualifications for the council before the roll call votes.
The council appointed Courtney Johnson (consumer seat) and Melissa Knutson (provider seat) to the Advisory Board of Health, each to terms beginning March 1, 2025 and ending Feb. 29, 2028. Carter described Johnson as having a public-health and research background, ties to Bloomington and an interest in aging services, and described Knutson as a veterinarian with experience in infectious disease and concerns about social isolation and mental health.
The council also appointed Beth McCoy, Paul Cote and Megan Lundquist to three seats on the Creative Placemaking Commission for terms from March 1, 2025 through Feb. 29, 2028. The interview panel report attached to the packet said the candidates demonstrated awareness of the commission’s citywide mandate.
To the Human Rights Commission the council appointed Julia Perry and Nawang Gansar for terms from March 1, 2025 through Feb. 29, 2028; Baron Lewis for a term from March 1, 2025 through Feb. 28, 2026; and Jessica Thornton for a term from March 1, 2025 through Feb. 28, 2027.
On the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission the council approved Renee Johnson and Ryan Logan to terms from March 1, 2025 through Feb. 29, 2028.
For the Sustainability Commission the council approved appointments of Andy Scott, Angie Bogosz and Aaron Smith to terms from March 1, 2025 through Feb. 29, 2028, and Claudia Aithesen to a term from March 1, 2025 through Feb. 28, 2027.
All votes on the five appointment packages were recorded as 5-0 in favor. Council members present and recorded on roll calls during the appointment votes were Mayor Bussey, Council member Carter, Council member Nelson, Council member D'Alessandro and Council member Muir.
The mayor and council thanked city staff for expanding and formalizing the application and interview process. Council members noted the high quality of the applicant pool and encouraged volunteers who were not appointed this cycle to continue seeking ways to serve the community.
The approved appointees are scheduled to begin their terms on March 1, 2025; the council packet listed term end dates as noted above. The council did not take separate votes on individual candidates beyond the packaged motions.
