A Murrieta parent told the City Council on Feb. 4 she was not notified by city or school authorities after a co-owner of a local day care was arrested and urged city leaders to set up a process for quicker community notification in such cases.
Veronica Rodriguez said her son had attended Eula Family Day Care since 2019 and that a co-owner was arrested on Jan. 28 on charges she described as a "lewd act on children" involving children who attended the day care. Rodriguez said families learned later by Googling, and that the day-care operator had posted a brief note about an "unforeseen" closure but that police, schools and the city had not directly notified parents.
"What is set in place when a tragedy like this happens?" Rodriguez asked the council, noting that during prior emergencies the city sent text alerts and she had received evacuation messages for the recent Fig Fire. She asked how the city could ensure better communication to schools, principals and families when incidents affecting children occur at local child-care providers.
Mayor Warren invited Police Chief Henry to speak with Rodriguez in the foyer after the meeting. Chief Henry stepped out to meet the speaker, according to the transcript, and no formal council action was taken on the request during the meeting. Councilmembers did not adopt new policy at the dais but the exchange prompted a direct offer from the chief to consult with the parent immediately.
