Tolles Career & Technical Center reports enrollment rise, plans expansion groundbreaking in June

Scott Melody gave the board an update on Tolles Career & Technical Center enrollment and the center’s facility expansion plans.
Melody reported that open enrollment (priority enrollment closed around Martin Luther King Day weekend) shows 1,033 students registered or expressing interest in Tolles programs for 2024–25 — roughly 150 more students than at the same point last year. He reminded the board that federal law requires a lottery if any Tolles program is over-enrolled; students submit a first and second choice and a lottery determines placement.
Staff also reviewed the Career Exploration Academy for sophomores, a half-day program that provides exposure to Tolles programs while awarding a sophomore English credit, and other pathway connections between home schools and Emerald Campus.
On facilities, Melody said expansion design work is progressing and that the board will see improved designs in February or March; the district plans to break ground in June and aims for facility availability after school begins in 2026 (staff noted the November 2026 target could change). Important upcoming dates highlighted included a career fair at Tolles on March 7 (about 100 businesses expected) and a Tolles-hosted board recognition dinner on March 23.
