The State Board of Education will display five student artworks selected from the Springville annual high school art competition, Superintendent Dixon said during the board's meeting. Lori Bayefsky, the board's fine arts coordinator and Beverly Taylor Sorensen arts learning program coordinator, told members the board chose six pieces and purchased five for the back wall rotation that will be in place for the May board meeting.
Bayefsky described the items as coming from the SUU (Southern Utah University) regional BTS arts partners, with student work representing Enoch Elementary School and North Elementary School in Cedar City. "They chose 6 pieces and of the 6, we will be purchasing 5 of those 6. We were able to purchase 5," Bayefsky said. She explained the elementary projects included insect-anatomy pencil drawings turned into mixed-media panels, Utah symbol oil-pastel prints, an integrated-science habitat project and second-grade ceramics that tell stories.
The board's fine arts coordinator said the BTS (Beverly Taylor Sorensen) arts program uses instructional coaches across regions to support classroom instruction and professional development: "We have instructional coaches all through the state that actually support BTS on the ground. They... do instruction as well as provide professional development and continuous learning for the teachers," Bayefsky said.
Board members present praised Bayefsky and the program. The purchased works will be rotated onto the boardroom’s back wall for the May meeting to allow members and visitors to view the student pieces.
The presentation noted the involvement of SUU as a regional partner serving Iron County schools and named Catherine Spagnuolo and Kirsten Anderson as the teachers/coach associated with the Enoch and North Elementary projects, respectively. The board did not take a formal vote; Bayefsky’s remarks and the purchase were presented as staff updates and program highlights.
