Engineer outlines Legion Street project, Mark Drive schedule and MMSD work; crosswalk realigned to west side

The city engineer reported on several transportation and utilities projects during the Feb. 10 Verona Common Council meeting.
For the Legion Street reconstruction project, which covers intersections at West Verona Avenue, Legion Street, Rita Street and Westlawn Avenue, the project is being bid in February and construction is anticipated to start in June. The engineer said proposed improvements at Westlawn Avenue include eliminating the east-side crosswalk across West Verona Avenue and adding a new crosswalk with a rapid rectangular flashing beacon (the push-button type) on the west side of the intersection.
"The proposed improvements at Westlawn Ave include eliminating the crosswalk across West Verona Ave on the east side of the intersection and adding a new crosswalk with a rapid rectangular flashing beacon along the west side of the intersection," the engineer said. Alder Helmke asked why staff chose the west side given prior feedback that high school students cross on the east side; the engineer said the crosswalk was realigned to be more perpendicular and that staff can provide additional information on the decision.
The Mark Drive reconstruction project is in design; construction is planned to start later in the summer of 2025. The engineer also reported on Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) projects: Badger Mill Creek interceptor Phase 5 is complete, Phase 6 is permitted and planned to start in spring 2025, and Pump Station 17 capacity improvements are ongoing by MMSD.
No council action was taken on these items; staff said they would provide additional detail about the crosswalk-location decision on request.
