Mobile City Council members reviewed several consent resolutions Feb. 11 that would declare structures at multiple addresses public nuisances and order demolition.
Staff said notices had been sent by first-class certified mail to property owners. For the house at 554 Hickory Street, staff told the council the owner is believed to be alive but there has been no contact and the rear of the site is collapsing. "All of our notices, our packet has gone out to the owners first class certified veil. It's my understanding that the gentleman that owns it is still alive. We have had no contact with them and I just want to remind the Council that the rear of this site is collapsing," staff said.
Another item, the structure at 916 Shady Brook Drive, had previously been held over for 60 days so the owner could obtain a demolition permit; staff reported no permit application had been received and recommended moving forward to declare the structure a public nuisance. For 1805 Larkwood Drive and 554 Hickory Street, the agenda listed declarations and orders for demolition; staff recommended moving forward on the ones lacking owner permits or contact. The council asked for clarification on which items needed to be laid over; Hickory Street was specifically requested to be laid over earlier in the agenda.
The items were presented as consent resolutions and listed on the agenda under demolitions and public nuisances; staff recommended declaring affected properties public nuisances and ordering demolition where owners had not responded or failed to start permitted demolition work.
