Papillion La Vista Community Schools administration presented a conservative staffing proposal ahead of next year’s budgeting that asks the board to approve 1.4 full-time-equivalent (FTE) additional school psychologist time, district staff said.
The request would primarily add 1.2 FTE at the elementary level and 0.2 FTE at the early childhood level to increase psychologist availability at buildings that share specialists. Administration said the district currently employs 19 school psychologists and also contracts for some services; the proposed shift follows a recent high-school behavior coach resignation and a decision to replace that role with psychologist support in that building.
Assistant superintendent Ms. Settles (presenting) said the district aims to expand in-house capacity and reduce contracted costs for registered behavior technician (RBT) services. The district now has an employee pursuing Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential, which would allow the district to supervise RBTs internally rather than contract for the work; the district currently has five RBT positions.
Separately, the district said it will begin hiring positions funded by an approved learning-community grant, including an early-literacy facilitator (who will also serve as the grant manager), a social worker focused on attendance initiatives and multiple literacy intervention support staff (noncertified) to provide classroom-focused literacy supports.
District leaders emphasized a conservative approach this year, noting slowed enrollment growth and the planned opening of a new building next year, which will require additional fixed staffing costs. The district said it will post immediate vacancies and begin hiring for next school year where openings are confirmed.
Board members asked clarifying questions about timing and implementation; administration said hiring for the school-psychologist positions would begin immediately for the next school year and that grant-funded positions are available to fill now because the grant funding is in place.
No final board vote was reported on the staffing proposal at the meeting; administration said it would return with formal budget requests and details as hiring proceeds.
