District IT staff presented a planned district‑wide wireless refresh that would move Verona Area School District from a Wi‑Fi 5 Aruba system to a Wi‑Fi 6E Extreme system, with a phased rollout beginning this summer at the high school and both middle schools.
Jason, who led the technical presentation, said the purchase would include switches for the entire district and access points for the largest sites immediately, with elementary sites scheduled for a later refresh timed to the next E‑Rate cycle. The project line item identified in materials was described as the 406 project; administrators characterized the total work as roughly an $800,000 scope with the district’s share—about $406,000—reflecting the portion the district will pay after E‑Rate discounts. Chad and Jason said the district will purchase the initial equipment through CDW and that E‑Rate paperwork already has been approved for the vendor to cover the federal share of the purchase.
Jason said the Wi‑Fi 6E equipment would reduce dead zones, carry more concurrent connections and better support district Chromebooks that include Wi‑Fi 6E chips. He described advantages of the Extreme system’s cloud tools: uploading floor plans, identifying coverage gaps and remotely diagnosing problems rather than physically walking the building to find dead spots.
Board members asked about refresh cadence, lifecycle and whether new bandwidth demands such as AI will shorten refresh cycles. Jason and board members discussed the typical industry refresh window (five to eight years) and said the district’s current equipment was purchased near the end of the prior technology cycle, which is why the district is moving now. Administrators said this configuration is intended to provide a longer runway before the next full refresh.
The procurement used a scored proposal process (RFP) that weighed manufacturer support, warranty, cloud features and price. Jason said the district compared vendors and selected Extreme after weighing cloud management and overall product ratings; he noted Aruba (the district’s current vendor) and Extreme both rate highly in industry evaluations.
The purchase and related items were placed on the board consent agenda; the board approved the consent agenda later in the meeting, which includes the wireless refresh purchase and related documents.
