Parents and board discuss drop-off and parking safety at Star Academy; staff cite cones and citations as interim measures

Board members and staff at the Natomas Charter District meeting raised safety concerns about morning drop-off and parking at Star Academy and discussed short-term mitigation steps.

A board member described repeated close calls in Star Academy's parking area, saying parents frequently park and walk children across active vehicle lanes where there is not a marked crosswalk. The member said reminders from school principals have not stopped the behavior and asked whether measures used at other campuses — such as painted crosswalks or traffic-stripe changes — could be considered.

Dr. Joe Wood and staff responded that the district has focused on keeping the drive-through lane safe and that when parents disobey parking rules in lots, staff have limited enforcement options. Staff said they placed cones in a curved area of one campus to block parking where cars were creating hazards and have coordinated with parking citation enforcement through their vendor (cited as "price price" in the record) to issue tickets after repeated noncompliance. A staff member said: "We had to put cones out, in the curve because even though we've told people multiple times it's not a drop off zone... now we just put cones out there."

Board members acknowledged a difficult parent-culture element and noted some parents verbally abuse staff who try to intervene. Staff indicated they will continue to emphasize the official drop-off procedures, use physical barriers where needed, and work with enforcement partners on citations to deter unsafe behavior.
