Votes at a glance: Munster board approves consent agenda, grants, staff stipends and capital projects

The School Town of Munster Board of School Trustees approved a series of motions by unanimous votes at its Feb. 10 meeting. Items approved included the consent agenda (minutes, accounts payable and payroll registers, personnel report, and overnight field trips), donations, fundraisers, awards of state grant stipends to eligible staff, a teacher supplemental-pay resolution, a gym sound system capital project, the district strategic plan and a district-wide copier replacement plan.

Key outcomes

- Consent agenda (Items 5.1'5.5): The board approved minutes from prior meetings, accounts-payable and payroll voucher registers, personnel recommendations and approval of overnight field trips presented on the screen. Motion to approve carried 5-0.

- Donations (Item 6.1): The board approved donations from multiple organizations for athletic teams and academic clubs at Munster High School and an anonymous $5,000 donation to the district. Motion carried 5-0.

- Fundraisers (Item 6.2): The board approved fundraiser requests for multiple school clubs and athletic programs including robotics, DECA, girls tennis, theater, dance, and other extracurriculars as presented. Motion carried 5-0.

- Reconsideration committee decision (Item 6.3): The board accepted the committee's original recommendation to retain the challenged title in district libraries (see separate article). Motion carried 5-0.

- Indiana Early Literacy Achievement Grant stipends (Item 6.4): The administration reported the district received $11,220.06 from the state program and recommended stipends be distributed to qualifying K-3 teachers, reading specialists, intervention staff and Title I instructional assistants. A total of 57 staff qualified; primary stipend amount was $182.14 with Title I instructional assistants receiving $45.54. Motion to approve carried 5-0.

- Resolution No. 883: Teacher supplemental payments (Item 6.5): The board approved Resolution No. 883 to provide supplemental pay for qualifying teachers for the 2024-25 school year. Categories include $1,000 per semester for teachers who teach Advanced Placement courses or are credentialed to teach dual-credit courses, $1,000 per semester for elementary teachers who earn a master's in math, reading or literacy, and specified stipends for participation in a Marzano assessment project (up to $650 full participation for a teacher; up to $325 for an instructional coach prorated by participation). Motion carried 5-0.

- Project 20230901: Gym sound system (Item 6.6): The board approved replacement of the high school gym sound system as part of the MHS 2024 renovation; this item will be installed with the new scoreboard and bleachers. Motion carried 5-0.

- School Town of Munster strategic plan (Item 6.7): The board approved the district strategic plan, a multi-year document developed with Hanover and staff. Motion carried 5-0.

- District copier replacement (Item 6.8): The board approved a plan to replace aging copiers across district buildings using a state purchase agreement; rollout and training will be provided at each school upon delivery. Motion carried 5-0.

Several of the approvals were introduced by administration and included brief superintendent or administrative explanations. The board recorded each approval as unanimous; the meeting minutes show formal motions, seconds and a recorded outcome of "motion carries 5 0" for the items above.
