School committee approves revised entrance-age policy after second reading

The Norton Public Schools School Committee approved a revision to policy JEB on student entrance age following a second reading during its Feb. 5 meeting.

Committee members said the revision reinstates language inadvertently removed in a prior update and clarifies both kindergarten cutoff rules and initial admission for first grade for students who attended private kindergarten or otherwise did not follow the district's kindergarten cutoff path.

The committee's presenter said the policy restores two provisions that had been lost in an earlier revision and explained the district process for reviewing students who might be eligible to enter first grade without a prior public kindergarten year. That process includes review of the child’s prior kindergarten report card, a meeting with parents, and a set of readiness assessments. The presenter said the district retains final authority on admission decisions.

Members asked how the policy interacts with preschool and the district’s voluntary early-childhood services; the presenter clarified that preschool enrollment rules differ because preschool is a voluntary program and Child Find placements for three-year-olds are handled separately.

The committee moved and seconded the motion to approve the policy; the chair called for the vote and multiple members responded “Aye,” with no dissent recorded in the transcript. The policy will be filed as JEB.
