Senate education committee backs reappointments to UNC Board of Trustees

Feinstein said the trustees’ continuity matters as UNC pursues enrollment strategies and the medical college project. "They have played a crucial role in guiding the implementation of UNC's 10 year strategic plan," Feinstein said.
Richard Monfort, a UNC graduate and longtime board chair, described his commitment to the university and its work on undergraduate access and teacher education. Dr. Brenda Campos Spitzi, a family physician who said she works for Sunrise Community Health and serves on the Greeley‑Evan‑School District board, told senators she wants to strengthen K–12 pipelines into UNC and support first‑generation and Hispanic students.
Senator Marchman moved the committee’s favorable recommendation to the full Senate; committee clerks recorded ayes from Senators Bridal, Kipp, Lundin, Rich, Marchman and the chair, with Senator Michaelson Janae excused. Committee chair announced the motion “passes unanimously.” The reappointments will be placed on the consent calendar for full‑Senate consideration. The committee also recommended the items be transmitted to the Governor for reappointment approval.
