The Shawnee Heights board voted 6–0 Thursday to approve a recommended capital‑outlay needs assessment package totaling $3.1 million, after administrators reviewed just under $4.3 million in project requests districtwide.
District staff told trustees the $3.1 million recommendation includes $2.73 million for projects not yet started and $370,000 for projects already approved or underway. The requests cover instructional and noninstructional needs, furniture, transportation, security and technology. Trustees asked for and received clarifications about specific requests and timing.
Board questions focused on how the district times spending relative to a potential bond program and on several line items: cabinetry and millwork for middle‑school classrooms (30 classrooms listed, with the recommendation to fund three rooms this cycle at an estimated $60,000 total for those three), playground rubber mulch and turf timing, and elementary‑level check printing (staff said checks are printed from Skyward and that updated printers are needed). Staff said some line items carried no dollar amounts because the work had been funded from other sources or included in broader project estimates.
Motion and vote: The motion to approve the $3.1 million capital‑outlay recommendation was moved by Rocky Buznitz and seconded by Christina Fleming; the board voted 6–0 in favor.
Staff said administrators balanced approvals against the possibility of future bond projects and would sequence work as needed. The buildings and grounds director and finance staff will further refine timing and notify the board as projects move forward.
