The Shawnee Heights board voted unanimously Thursday to approve submission of an extension application for the district’s early‑childhood block grant and to accept the grant if awarded.
A district presenter described the application as an extension request that is roughly half the size of what the district received in each of the previous two years. Staff said the funding would continue pre‑K classroom supports, monthly family‑engagement nights and home‑literacy packets, including two books per month that become the child’s to build a home library. Staff noted the program emphasizes at‑risk families who might not otherwise have access to books and shared language experiences tied to pre‑K classroom themes.
Motion and vote: The motion to approve submission and possible acceptance of the grant application was moved by Sarah Daugherty and seconded by Christina Fleming; the board voted 6–0 in favor.
Board discussion was limited to clarifying that the program targets pre‑K and early‑childhood activities and that the district had not yet received official notice of award at the time of the meeting.
