Board approves middle-school course name changes, tenor/bass choir and a pilot of IXL math at high school

The Valley Center USD 262 Board of Education approved several academic updates: two middle-school course name changes, a new tenor/bass choir elective at the high school, and a pilot of the IXL supplemental math resource for high-school remediation and enrichment.
The board approved renaming the middle-school course currently called "seventh grade high math" to "seventh-grade accelerated math," to better describe the combined seventh/eighth-grade accelerated pathway. Trustees also approved renaming a middle-school art class from "Intro to Drawing and Design" to "Advanced Art" to align course sequencing and reduce confusion for families.
At the high school, the district added a tenor/bass choir elective to increase options for students with lower-voice parts; administrators said the new course does not replace existing choirs but expands elective opportunities.
The board also authorized a pilot of IXL Math in high-school classrooms to support remediation and enrichment. Curriculum staff said the pilot license is currently free and that KSDE funding covers access through the 2026–27 school year; the district will evaluate whether the tool improves diagnostic-targeted instruction and student outcomes before committing funding beyond any state-supported period.
Board members emphasized that the resource would supplement—not replace—the district’s adopted curriculum and that any longer-term purchase would be considered with finance staff and against projected benefits.
