Board approves Camp Hornet, ESY and high-school summer programs

The Valley Center USD 262 Board of Education approved three summer programs: Camp Hornet (K–8 exploratory and remedial offerings), the district Extended School Year (ESY) special-education program, and high-school summer courses for credit recovery and online learning.
Megan Thompson outlined Camp Hornet’s mix of exploratory classes (art, STEM, makerspace, outdoor nature exploration) and remedial reading and math interventions; exploratory classes are user-funded at about $25–$30 per week and last year averaged 11 students per class. Thompson asked the board to add six exploratory teacher slots for this summer and said the program supports kindergarten readiness and family engagement.
Danielle Savage described ESY services and eligibility. The district expects 30–35 students across ages pre-K to 21; services are determined by each student’s IEP team. Savage said ESY staffing decisions will be made in late March or April and noted the district may use consultative therapy models for some specialists.
High school leaders presented the summer-credit model and an enrollment-fee structure aimed at credit recovery and online course facilitation through Edgenuity. The high school program was described as serving students who need to regain credits or access district online coursework; enrollment fee schedules and staff coverage were included with the recommendation.
Each summer program motion carried on the record: Camp Hornet and ESY were approved 5-0; the high-school summer program likewise carried as presented. Trustees praised program growth and staff planning for the upcoming summer.
