The Valley Center USD 262 Board of Education approved the district's summer drivers education program, including a $220 enrollment fee and course schedule that spans classroom work in mid-May and driving sessions from late May through early July.
Greg introduced Mr. Edwards, the district's drivers education coordinator, who outlined the program schedule: packets released Feb. 24, enrollment days in March, classroom coursework beginning May 12 and driving instruction starting May 23 through July 9. Edwards said the program typically enrolls about 90 students and sometimes reaches roughly 100 once wait lists are processed. "We do offer free introduced grants for those students that it's available to," he told the board, referring to fee assistance for eligible families.
The district uses four vans for driving instruction and said staffing includes three instructor-drivers plus Edwards. The board moved to approve the program and enrollment fee; the motion passed with a recorded on-stage second and the board announced the outcome as 9-0 in favor.
Administrators said the program draws some students from outside district boundaries when neighboring districts lack summer driver programs and noted the district’s capacity limits. The approved fee and schedule will allow staff to begin enrollment and parent meetings in March.
