Board receives first read of KASB policy updates; staff note emergency med availability

Deputy Superintendent Josh Gidman presented a packet of policy updates at first read to the Garden City USD 457 Board on Feb. 3. The updates were the December recommendations from the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) and included additions, deletions and consolidations intended to align district policy with recent legislation and best practices.
Gidman said two policies (CD and CGI) were recommended for deletion because language from those policies has been consolidated into policy CG, and that policy CC had been revised at the request of Jennifer Cunningham to change a permissive "may" to a mandatory "shall." He said routine policy updates will return on the consent agenda at the next meeting.
On medical items, Gidman said district staff now maintain in-stock epinephrine for emergency administration and that the district can administer epinephrine if a staff member suspects anaphylaxis even if a student-specific prescription is not on file. He also said the district already has a Narcan policy and that Narcan is available at the high school and middle school campuses.
Gidman said another personnel-related policy will be delayed for a May presentation after the classified handbook language is updated, and staff will bring a separate nonresident/in-district transfer policy for board consideration to ensure consistent practices.
The board took no action; the packet will return for consent if no substantive changes are requested.
