A district payroll committee reported to the Geary County Schools Board on Jan. 13, 2025, recommending the district keep its current monthly payroll schedule after staff education and a survey process.
Diane Winn (payroll committee lead) told the board the committee met multiple times, prepared educational materials for staff, ran two in-person briefings and two Zoom sessions, and provided a recorded presentation for employees to review. The committee also distributed a survey to gather staff preferences and to show realistic paycheck examples so staff could make an informed choice.
Survey results presented by Winn showed most respondents preferred the existing once‑per‑month pay schedule: 69% chose staying with one monthly paycheck, about 30% favored moving to twice monthly, and breakdowns were consistent across staff groups. Winn said 62% of respondents indicated a preference for pay after the 15th of the month (the district’s current timing is typically on or around the 20th).
Why it matters: Committee members said changing the cadence without comprehensive education could materially affect hourly and classified staff paychecks (for example, during months with snow days). Committee members and classified staff representative Belinda “Belle” Whaley said the educational material and example pay stubs helped respondents understand potential impacts on benefits and net pay.
Committee recommendation and next steps: After reviewing survey results and limited written feedback, the payroll committee recommended the district retain the current monthly schedule with pay on or around the 20th. The committee did not ask the board to enact a change; instead they said they will share the full survey feedback with staff and continue communication about payroll processes.
