Alta Brown students, staff showcase Leader in Me program and literacy goals

Alta Brown Elementary staff and students presented the school's Leader in Me program, enrollment and staffing changes, literacy benchmarks and student leadership projects to the Garden City USD 457 board on Feb. 3.
Alta Brown Elementary Principal Julie Copridge told the Garden City USD 457 Board of Education on Feb. 3 that the school's enrollment has grown and staff are emphasizing a combined approach of culture, academics and leadership.
Copridge said Alta Brown's student population increased by about 25 students this year to 348 and the school employs about 65 staff members. She described Leader in Me as the foundation of the school's work and invited students to demonstrate the program's "7 habits." "We are quite a bit larger this year than we have been in years past by about 25 students," Copridge said.
The presentation framed academic work around two "WIGs" (wildly important goals). Angela, identified as an academic action-team lead, summarized winter reading data and targets: kindergarten at 76 percent on benchmark, first grade 58 percent and second grade 66 percent, with a goal of 80 percent by spring. The school said it uses structured literacy routines, frequent corrective feedback and daily decodable-text practice to lift performance.
Speakers described multiple student leadership structures: student, staff and parent lighthouse teams; classroom scoreboards; individual student portfolios with goal-setting tabs; and service projects called "Dragon Families," which pair students with community residents for reading and outreach. Student lighthouse members described two priorities this year: forming a cheer squad for assemblies and fundraising for tire swings on the playground.
Staff also noted special-education and English-learner services. Copridge said the school handles more than 100 special-education individualized education program (IEP) meetings annually, has about six students on 504 plans, about 46 English-learner students and uses nine translating devices provided by the district bilingual office.
Jalesa Flores, Alta Brown administrative intern, described new morning-announcement videos and listed recent items such as a middle-school concert and upcoming field trips. The principal and staff said robotics and other extracurricular teams are active.
The presentation closed with an invitation to board members to visit classrooms and student leadership activities. The board offered no formal action on the presentation; it was received for information.
