High school pilots and summer driver's education: board reviews proposed texts and expanded Driver's Ed sessions

Derby High School teachers presented a slate of curriculum pilots and a summer driver's education plan to the board on Feb. 10. The board reviewed proposed instructional materials for physical education, health, lifetime fitness, AP Chemistry and physics pilots and heard plans to expand Driver’s Education with two summer sessions.
Instructional staff proposed pilot materials from publishers including McGraw Hill and Pearson for PE, health and physics courses; AP Chemistry teachers proposed titles from Pearson and Cengage. Administrators said pilots will be reviewed and returned to the board on Feb. 24 for action. Teachers plan to pilot segments of texts if course sections or AP pacing make full-text adoption impractical.
Dr. Holly Putnam Jackson presented driver’s education plans: two sessions are proposed — May 28–July 1 (25-day session) offering two class times (8 a.m. and 10 a.m.) with driving arranged separately, and July 7–Aug. 1 (20-day session) with an 8 a.m. class. The first session’s expanded schedule would allow the district to offer driver's education to up to 100 students.
Board members asked clarifying questions about textbook publication dates, preview events and parent interest. The transcript records presentation and review; curriculum pilots will return for formal board action at a later meeting.
