Technology department outlines network refresh, cybersecurity training and GoGuardian capacity

Dennis Elich, Derby Public Schools director of technology, told the board on Feb. 10 that the district will replace network equipment across buildings this summer and that the work will require temporary communications outages at each building during replacement. He said the administration will develop a calendar to complete the work with minimal disruption to summer activities.
Elich described a recent FEMA-provided cybersecurity exercise his team attended that simulated a ransomware attack; he praised the district technicians’ incident-response skills and noted that preparedness remains a priority. He said the technology department’s goals are stability, security and sustainability.
Elich also told the board that GoGuardian licensing currently in place gives parents the means to implement many of the equipment-usage and oversight recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Committee without additional district cost, though a few recommendations may be unsupported for cybersecurity reasons. He emphasized coordination with school leaders to schedule the network replacement to avoid interruption of critical summer programming.
