Michigan House excuses four members, allows committees to meet and sets adjournment for Jan. 16

The Michigan House of Representatives recorded a quorum and approved several procedural motions during today’s session, including motions to excuse members, permission for committees to meet during the remainder of the day, and an announcement that there would be no further voting until the next scheduled sitting.

The clerk announced attendance and said, “Madam speaker, a quorum of the house is present. There are no members absent with prior excuse.” The statement was read after the clerk closed the board and tallied attendance.

Majority floor leader Posthumus moved to excuse Representative Paquette, saying, “I move to excuse Representative Paquette.” The motion was adopted without objection. Later, Minority leader Fitzgerald moved to excuse Representatives T. Carter, Edwards, Herzberg and Whitsett; that motion was also approved without objection.

Majority floor leader Posthumus moved that the House “proceed to the order of motions and resolutions,” and that committees be given leave to meet during the balance of today’s session. Both requests were granted without objection.

Separately, the majority floor leader announced there would be no further voting today and that when the House adjourns it would stand adjourned until Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, at 12 p.m. The session record also notes that WWTV Cadillac was given permission to record during the session.

The actions taken were procedural and did not change pending legislation; they addressed attendance, internal scheduling and committee meeting permissions. No roll-call vote tallies were recorded in the transcript; each listed motion was approved “without objection.”

The House will reconvene as announced on Jan. 16, 2025, at 12 p.m.
