Board delays district mental-health report to fall 2026 to allow consistent data collection

The Derby Board of Education on Feb. 10 voted to move the district’s strategy 4 annual report on student and staff mental health and wellness from June 2025 to the fall of 2026 to allow the committee time to standardize data collection and to select a consistent screening and risk-assessment tool.
Lou Anne Sparks, director of alternative learning and chair of Strategy 4, told the board the committee faces timing challenges: key data sets (attendance, discipline and wellness participation) finalize at different points in the year, which could force a June report to rely on mixed or lagging information. The committee recommended selecting a district-wide risk-assessment instrument and aligning reporting windows before producing a comprehensive annual report.
Board members discussed alternatives, including producing a baseline report this year and a full evaluation after a year of consistent data. Several board members suggested separating staff wellness reporting from student data if that makes reporting more manageable. The board approved changing the report deadline to fall 2026, 7-0, and asked the committee to return with a timeline and tool recommendation before that date.
Sparks said Panorama and Skyward will be used to pull data once the committee finalizes which measures to collect.
