The Salt Lake City Council unanimously adopted a joint resolution Tuesday honoring Cindy Gus Jensen for her 36 years of service, including more than three decades as the council’s executive director. The resolution recognizes Jensen’s role advising seven mayors and more than 50 council members and highlights her involvement in major city initiatives over that span.
The resolution, read aloud by the council, cited Jensen’s work on issues including downtown development negotiations, City Creek Center, airport expansion, the Utah Inland Port Authority, the 2022 Winter Olympics and investments in city infrastructure. Council members and Mayor Mendenhall spoke in turn, thanking Jensen for mentorship, institutional knowledge and cultivating a staff prepared to continue council work after her departure.
“Cindy Gus Jensen is the most powerful person in city hall,” Mayor Mendenhall said during the tribute, adding that Jensen “only acts on behalf of the highest public good.” Council members described Jensen as an educator and a mentor who guided new members through procedures and helped shape staff culture. Jennifer Bruno, the council’s incoming executive director, presented Jensen with a Harper’s Weekly print as a retirement gift.
The resolution notes Jensen’s retirement effective Jan. 31, 2025, and the council and mayor extended their gratitude and best wishes for her retirement. The council then voted to adopt the resolution by voice vote; the clerk announced the motion passed unanimously.
